Biography

Dr. Phil Vahey, Director of Mathematics Learning Environments at SRI Education’s Center for Learning Technologies, has been researching the use of dynamic technologies to help students learn difficult mathematics concepts for over 20 years. Through his NSF-funded research on the use of technology to help young children learn STEM concepts he has collaborated with designers on the creation of Next Generation Preschool Math / Early Math with Gracie & Friends and Next Generation Preschool Science / Early Science with Nico & Nor. He has also run several large NSF- and Department of Education-funded projects in the area of middle school mathematics, including the i3-funded Validation of SunBay Digital Mathematics and an NSF-funded project which investigates how to leverage the affordances of dynamic representational technology to expand opportunities for English language learners (ELLs) to participate in Common Core Mathematical Practices. Prior to joining CTL he received his PhD in learning sciences from UC Berkeley.
